Theodore Dreiser (1871–1945) was an American writer and public figure. In 1944, he received the Honorary Gold Medal for outstanding achievements in arts and literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1927, he traveled through the USSR and published the book "Dreiser Looks at Russia." "The Financier" is the first part of Theodore Dreiser's famous "Desire Trilogy," based on the life story of American millionaire Charles Yerkes, who played a significant role in the development of the public transportation systems in Chicago and the London Underground. The main character, Frank Cowperwood, is born into a family of a minor bank employee but, thanks to his extraordinary intellect, iron will, and unusual determination, earns a huge fortune. He enters the world of luxury and big money, finds himself in the whirlpool of major financial operations, and mingles with the best businessmen of his time. Gradually, the ambitious young man becomes an unscrupulous, authoritative, and greedy millionaire. Life as the embodiment of the American Dream, which will come at a high price.
