"Kallocain" is a famous Swedish dystopia nominated for the Prometheus Book Award. The novel is placed alongside works such as George Orwell's "1984" and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World." The World State is a perfect empire of the future. Here, total surveillance over people is openly conducted, and informing on others is the duty of every decent citizen. Chemist Leo Kall is a loyal supporter of the ruling regime. He develops the truth serum "kallocain," which can reveal feelings and the most intimate thoughts of people. Now traitors will be exposed one by one—the main character embodies the ideas of the Grand Inquisitor by Dostoevsky about control. Very soon, Leo begins to suspect his wife of infidelity and decides to find out the truth with the help of the serum. But isn't it surprising that everything in the world, even the truth, loses its value as soon as it becomes compulsory?
