Henry Smith's father always told him: if you build your house far from Bed, it will never find you. Henry's older brother, Franklin, was hit by a pickup truck driven by a refugee from Cambodia, Chay Chuan. An ethnic conflict flares up in the town. And Henry cannot think of anything except climbing Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine, where he was going with his brother - and now he takes his dog, his best friend, and sets off on a hike. This journey, exciting and dangerous, reveals to Henry the true path to himself and one important secret: no one can run away from Bed, but this does not negate the possibility of being happy.
