Obedience to Authority: A Scientific Perspective on Power and Morality

What is a respectable citizen willing to do when obeying orders? Reflections on the tens of thousands of people in Nazi Germany who sent their fellows to death simply by fulfilling their duty prompted Stanley Milgram to conceive a provocative experiment. The behavior of participants across various experiment variations consistently confirmed Milgram's grim suspicions: some subjects sternly "punished" others without exercising their right to refuse. The paradox lies in the fact that virtues such as loyalty, discipline, and self-sacrifice, which we value in a person, bind people to the most inhumane systems of power. But since the time of Nazi death camps, human nature has not changed. This is why the relevance of the concept, convincingly confirmed by the experiment, can be debated but is dangerous to underestimate. Milgram's famous experiment, initially met with protest and skepticism, was later recognized as one of the most morally significant studies in psychology.
